Collaboration helps drive Design Thinking as a culture in the institute and to create ecosystem value in the region
Chennai & Trichy | Wednesday, 13 April 2022: The School of Design Thinking, a leading institution committed to creating awareness about Design Thinking and Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM) have exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding for taking Design Thinking as an integral part of BIM’s management course for its students and in its applicability in organization in the region. In a dedicated event, the document was exchanged between Dr Anbu Rathinavel (Head, School of Design Thinking,) and Dr Asit K Barma (Director, BIM).
The Memorandum of Understanding will help promote interaction between the School of Design Thinking and BIM in mutually beneficial areas. It will also provide a formal basis for initiating Industry Institutional Collaboration between the two entities. At the core of the MOU is Design Thinking.
The School of Design Thinking will help set up a Centre for Design Thinking on the BIM Trichy campus. This center would aim to advance the practice of Design Thinking in the local ecosystem to identify new ecosystem value and to conduct research on the next practices in design thinking. The Centre also aims at applying Design Thinking frameworks to functional areas, such as Government Service Delivery, SDG/ESG initiatives, and new technology applications across areas such as Finance, Marketing, Operations and Supply Chain, and HR.
The agreement also emphasizes on the execution of Design Thinking oriented programs and activities for BIM’s students, faculty and stakeholders to enable Design Thinking in campus. This would also, among other activities, help initiate Design Thinking Club activities. In specific, School of Design Thinking will be closely associated in creating Design Thinking Club for Students and in enabling industrial visits. It will provide focused mentorship in addition to associated activities such as guest lectures, workshops and conclaves and conferences.
Commenting on the agreement, Dr Anbu Rathinavel states, “We, at the School of Design Thinking, are committed evangelizing the values of Design Thinking and as such we strive to make it a culture across organizations and industries. This is possible only by bringing a mindset transformation to unlock the potential of Design Thinking. I am very happy that premier management institutes, such as BIM, not only recognize the value of Design Thinking but are also active collaborators in taking this to the society at large through their students.
“The School of Design Thinking collaborates with educational institutions, corporations and businesses, startups and entrepreneurs, government agencies along with social organizations across India to foster Design Thinking in their organizations and witness transformation.”
Expressing happiness over this MoU, Dr Asit K Barma said, “We endeavor to create a design-driven culture at BIM. Partnering with the School of Design Thinking and setting up our Centre for Design Thinking will foster scholastic pursuit, research, and practice around Design Thinking. Not just Fortune 500 companies and marquee brands alone, we want to enable everyone in our local ecosystem to take advantage of Design Thinking to create ecosystem value leading to better products, better services, and eventually a better planet.”

About BIM, Trichy
Established in 1984, Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Tiruchirappalli, is an autonomous school of excellence of Bharathidasan University, professionally run by an independent society. BIM offers a two-year residential MBA program approved by AICTE with specialization in Marketing, Finance, Operations, Human Resources, Digital Business, and Analytics; Ph.D. and Management Development /Faculty Development Programs. This year BIM has been appointed by the Government of Tamil Nadu as its Academic Partner to conduct TN CM’s two-year Fellowship program. More than 4000 BIM Alumni spread around the globe are significantly contributing to corporates and society today. Former Union Minister Bharat Ratna Late Shri C Subramaniam was instrumental in setting up this B School. He was motivated by the idea of starting a School of Excellence in Management that would be organically linked with an industrial complex. His belief was that just as a medical school needed to be attached to a hospital to be effective as a teaching institution, a Management School likewise had to be linked with industry. Accordingly, the institute was set up in collaboration with BHEL within its sprawling Tiruchirappalli campus. BIM Trichy has introduced its unique Pi shaped program architecture to nurture the professionals of tomorrow. All its programs are aligned with new technology applications and SDG/ESG. (www.bim.edu)
